NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, August 2, 2009

I know that too many are looking at the blog but I do have some good information for you. First of all, to everyone who made it to Hershey sure hope you enjoyed the show. I did not get there. I thought about going but to make the trip by myself when I wasn't in the mood to shop for quilting supplies did not seem worth the effort. I could have helped out in some one's booth but I didn't thing I wanted to go and work either. At any rate there is always next year.

Rachel Shaw of Shaw's Sew & Vac has some exciting news. She is adding fabric. Yes, that's right fabric is coming to Martinsburg. She will be stocking a limited amount of fabric--basics, wide backings, batting to help you finish any all of your projects. For embroiders and photo transfer people, she will be stocking stabilizers and muslin--both regular and 200 thread count. Among the fabrics she is planning on carrying, RJR, Moda, Quilt Treasures (Marie Osmond). She also has two AQS editions for $425.00. These machines are like the Janome 760 with a few less stitches but still that 12 pound machine. A great machine to take to class, retreats, etc. This is a great price on a wonderful little machine. She only has two of them so don't delay. Shaw's Sew & Vac is located on Winchester Ave (Route 11) just south from Route 9. There are on the right just across the street from Martin and Seibert law firm. Stop in and see all the great machines that Rachel has and be sure and say hi.

Hope your summer is going well. Enjoy the rain!!! Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, July 26, 2009

Where has the summer gone? Is it really the end of July? Soon the school buses will be back on the road and the next thing you know the leaves will be turning gold and red. Here in Martinsburg our new shopping center opened this weekend. There is a Target, Bed Bath & Beyond and Michaels. There are other things coming but those are the ones that are opened so far. I stopped by Michaels on Saturday and was delighted to see the big section they have for quilters/sewers. I picked up a new needle safe--those little magnetized case that holds your needles securely--I had lost my last one. They have a huge selection of rotary cutters, blades and mats--remember they have those great coupons when you need to shop. They have basting spray, a large selection of pins and a great selection of scissors. Don't forget that Rachael Shaw at Shaws Sew & Vac on Winchester Ave. has Gutterman Thread. So the good news is that even though Nutmeg Lodge is gone there are still quality selections of basic notions available to you.

This is Quilt Odyssey week. I know that a number of you are going--have a great time. If I get to make the trip, I might see you there.

The other thing--if any of you are on Facebook--let's be friends. Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, July 19, 2009

Okay, it's time for some updates.
  • My job at Prettyman Broadcasting is going quite well. I love what I am doing these days--last week I closed two very nice pieces of business and am busy working on proposals for some really exciting commercials.
  • Judy is successfully running Thimbleberries Club, enjoying the soccor season and has started volunteering at the horse rescue farm
  • Marcy is enjoying the summer--her friend Nancy Sandberg was here for a visit from Texas
  • Pattie is busy with a new client picking out things for their house--can you believe that someone wants appliances with knobs!!!
  • Cathie is working at Traditions at the White Swan three days a week. That's right if you want to still have fabric cut by someone from Nutmeg Lodge---check out Cathie at Traditions on Tues., Wed., or Sat.
  • Kelly has been having fun in the water and school will be starting soon.
  • Debbie still has her day job with the computer company.
  • Rick and Hendley are getting by at Laber's Rick's cousin's dog has been hanging out for a while which makes Hendley less sad that his girls and treats are no long around.

Don't forget that Quilt Odyssey is coming in a couple of weeks. There is a booth hop this year. Nutmeg Lodge gave up the space and Piecing The Past took over our spot in the hop. Check out their booth to get your passport and collect all of your blocks at the show plus a finishing kit. We loved the quilt that we made and Donna will have it all in her booth at Quilt Odyssey--this is the 10th Anniversary for that great show.

Hope everyone is having a great summer!!!!

Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, July 12, 2009

I did not post the blog last week--sorry for those of you who are following me. I have really been getting myself adjusted to my new life and trying to figure out my new schedule. This is sort of like being in a foreign land where the clocks work on a different time zone and the bed is facing the wrong direction. My new job is now full time and I am trying to make a new life for myself. Just the routine of coming home and having dinner seems somehow sort of upside down. I need to get a letter out to everyone about Retreat and I need to get a schedule started for Willing Hands. I am aware of all of this and really will get that done in the next few days.

In the meantime, life does go on. I have been loving this weather and my asthma has subsided somewhat. In case you did not know--I spent the first two weeks of my new life having a terrible time with what has become a chronic asmatic condition. Several conversations and trips to the doctors, xrays, new meds, etc., etc., and I am finally able to breath fairly well and can at least sleep through the night. Enough of that jargon-----

Robyn is back in Singapore and the time differences in our lives makes it next to impossible to communicate. The design business is going but I wish it were more organized. Soon I hope. Pattie and Cathy are still with me on that front.

Judy is still running Thimbleberries and her ladies seem to be as pleased as can be. I am glad for that.

I miss all of you and hope we run into each other soon. Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, June 28, 2009

Where does the time go? The month almost over, the first half of the year almost gone and Nutmeg Lodge will be officially closed in a couple more days. On Wednesday, I have a mover coming to bring the last few things to my basement. It is kind of eerie to me the sequence of events--I think back eight years ago and I was doing the same thing in reverse. Moving things that had accumulated in my house into the space on Wilson Street. As the time as been accomplished since I made the decision in April, things have come together and I am very peaceful about the decision. I do continue to wish each of you well. As I have said in the past, please feel free to contact me if you have questions, need help, etc. My email address is nbradley67@msn.com. Don't hesitate to use it if you need to. If you email me, I will send you my telephone number.

I went to my 50th high school reunion this weekend. What fun!! I went to Leesburg on Friday afternoon, checked into my hotel, ran into my locker mate from school. The memories started as soon as I arrived. Off to a barbeque that evening and was delighted with all of the fun we had. Saturday we toured our school. My goodness how things have changed. The front of the school looks the same but the additions just boggle the mind. The principle led us through the school and was complimentary about all the things that he had heard about us over the years. We were quite an exemplary class. Then Saturday evening we had a large banquet at the hotel. Again, a lovely evening--cocktails, great food, dancing and a ton of fun!!! I didn't get to my room until almost midnight.

My best advice--if your high school class is having a reunion---by all means go. It is amazing how different classmates are when they are seasoned. I had more than a few surprises.

Wishing each of you the best summer possible. The blog will continue on this site until we get things accomplished at Robyn Pandolph Design Studio site. Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, June 21, 2009

First, Happy Father's Day to any Dad that might be reading this--but for those women, pass my sentiments along. I have had 20 years without my Father--he passed away just a few days before Father's Day 20 years ago. My daughter was pregnant with her first child and my first grandchild. A girl, we came to learn in November--Jessica. My daddy never knew her but would have delighted in being a great grandfather. At any rate, I still miss him and wish I could have said those words to him today.

A HUGE THANK YOU!!! The luncheon at the Purple Iris on Tuesday was, in a word--FANTASTIC. Thanks to everyone who planned and attended the event. I will get thank you notes out soon but wanted to share with everyone that it was a wonderful affair. I was so touched by all those who got up and shared a moment with me. Judy was most eloquent as an Emcee--and the food was stellar. All-in-all, a perfect occasion.

I was back at the Purple Iris again that evening for my graduation from Leadership Berkeley. So many things in my life are coming to and end. And yet, I feel like I am on the brink of life itself. The events that have unfolded for me this week have made me ever mindful that life is so brief and tenuous. We must all seize the moment and live life to its fullest and, hopefully, along the way make a difference in the world. If you saw my face on TV or my name in the paper--I did not choose or seek that moment, but circumstances put me in a place that gave me that moment. I have tried to search within myself to figure out why I was there. I hope that it gives me the courage and knowledge to make a difference in the lives of others so that a senseless and cruel act can help someone in the future.

Nutmeg Lodge was not open for business this past week, however, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday those wonderful staff members will be in sorting and organizing the final items. If you have Saturday Sampler kits to pick up or fixtures to pick up, you can do so on those days. It is still best to call just to make sure there is someone there. The gals will be calling to let you know what the schedule is if you are on a list for things needed to be picked up.

As I have stated before, the web site will continue until it is melded into the site for Robyn Pandolph Design Studio. The blog will continue here and then there.

It has been my pleasure to have known so many of you. I plan to be around and should always be accessable to each of you.

Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, June 14, 2009

NUTMEG LODGE IS OFFICIALLY CLOSED. Those seem like sad words but I really want to assure everyone that it really is going to be okay. Ten years ago when I moved to Martinsburg there was no place to buy fabric in this part of West Virginia. I am proud of the service and goods that I have been able to provide in the past eight years. I know that many of your are sad and disappointed that the shop has closed. It was a hard decision for me to make and I pondered on it for many months--at the end of the day I was so tired of running it by myself and keeping up with all the paper work, bills, reports, etc., etc. Nelson was so helpful to me with all the paper part of the business and I have struggled with that part of it ever since he has been gone. Again, I am proud of what I did and feel sure that at some point in time another shop will pop up and take my place.

In the meantime, I do have the space for two more weeks and have a lot of cleaning up and moving out. There are a great many things that will have to come home with me. I am still running the Willing Hands Club and will need a lot to keep that club running. Judy will be running Thimbleberries. If you belong to that club and have questions, you can call Judy direct or email me and I will pass it along to her.

If you have questions and/or need help with something you can email me. I had passed out my cards on Saturday with my cellphone number on it. Email me and I can send that number along to you. I really want to be as helpful to everyone as I can and make this transition as easy as possible.

On Tuesday a group will gather at the Purple Iris--it will give me an opportunity to make closure. I'm not sure exactly what to expect that day but I know I will probably be overwhelmed.

This blog will continue for a time--to the end of the month and a little beyond until we get things combined with Robyn's site.

Once more I will commend a valiant and wonderful group of women that have been by my side through all of this--Judy, Marcy, Pattie, Cathy, Kelly and Debi--the biggest THANK YOU possible. For the past two months they have cut, moved, repriced, reorganized, remerchandised and given their all for the good of the effort. I will forever be grateful and amazed at how wonderfully they accomplished every task set out and then some!!!!!
