NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday Decemer 30, 2007
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! HAPPY 2008!!!! HAPPY NEW QUILT PROJECTS!!!! HAPPY NEW CLUBS AND CLASSES!!!! There is a lot to celebrate. An old year out, a new one in, all the Clubs at Nutmeg Lodge will be kicking off new projects, a great lineup of classes, so much fabric to choose from, and to kick off all of this anticipated fun---A SALE!!!! I know that we had that small event before Christmas because we were busting at the seams but I want to get back to our old Sale Schedule so we are starting the year off with our wonderful "beginning of a new year" event. Everything is 25% off through the store with the exception of sewing machines and quilting systems. This even will run the first two weeks of January so that everyone coming to Saturday Sampler can get in on the fun. We still have a couple of machines on sale and they will remain so until we get geared up for a sewing machine event later in the year. We will be adding to the 50%plus things in the front of the store. With the Block of the Month projects, the Saturday Sampler project and several Club projects all requiring you to purchase background fabrics this is a great opportunity to get those purchases out of the way. If you have tops left over from 2007 that need backing, another great opportunity.
I have tried to get the Club information posted but that has been slow in getting to Kathy. Here is a run down:
Willing Hands will be focusing on a new Block of the Month pattern from Robyn called Home for the Holidays. Club includes pattern---an optional fabric pack is available.
Thimbleberries this club will run as last year with a quarterly pattern on our Lodge Quilt. Fabric packs can be purchased monthly or quarterly.
Crazy Club will be focusing on a year-long project from a book
Baltimore Album will be focusing on a new block of the month entitled Ladies of the Sea. Club includes pattern
Primitive Club will be focusing on primitive techniques and exploring different aspects of primitive needlework and decorating
New to Nutmeg Lodge will be a Redwork Club. This club will be focusing on embroidery techniques and Penny Squares in particular.
We have a print out available for you to pick up on all the clubs with pricing, meeting dates, etc. Remember that membership in our Clubs is unlimited and you can join at anytime during the year---we will catch you up if you missed previous months.
Again, have a very Happy New Year---we look forward to seeing you at Nutmeg Lodge first thing in 2008. Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, December 23, 2007
Greetings on this eve of Christmas Eve--I sincerely hope that you have finished all your shopping, every last parcel has been wrapped and mailed if necessary, all your baking and cooking is done and you are ready to enjoy a blessed holiday!!!! In my family we have celebrated collectively and individually several times--two more gatherings and we will have dined, opened and enjoyed our family in great splendor.
I worked hard last week to get the class schedule pulled together and posted. You can view all of the classes by clicking on the CLASS button and then enroll by printing the form and mailing, emailing or coming in in person to sign up for a class. I am pleased with the wide variety of subjects that Nutmeg Lodge will be offering the first quarter of 2008. I also worked to get the Club information ready. It too will be posted on the web site soon and, in the meantime, you can stop by for a copy of complete club descriptions. For this you can also enroll in person on by phone or email. I happy also with the lineup for projects for all the clubs for 2008.
The end of a year has seen a lot of changes to Nutmeg Lodge. I would like to thank each of you for your patronage and support all through 2007. You are what makes this shop so great!!! Everyone on staff joins me in wishing you a Very Merry Christmas!!!!
We have a lot of sale items out front of the shop---don't let the opportunity of the great prices for backings pass you by. See you next week. Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, December 9, 2007
WOW!!! What a week--first we received about 200 bolts of fabric, we worked hard to check it all in, then it snowed, then we worked some more to get it finally checked in and find a place to put it all.
The Saturday Sampler people were surprised by an unadvertised sale. And to that end, everyone else can enjoy this unexpected dividend to shopping as well. There are just so many bolts that we really need to get some of them whittled down. So.....when you come in to shop, you will receive 25% off the entire shop (sewing machines are not inclued).
I really tried to get all the Club information and Class schedule lined up for this publication but because of a really nagging neck problem I have found it really hard to sit in front of the computer and get this finished. Fortunately it looks like I will be able to get this done as I have had a much better today than the last four or five.
We had taken orders for the Sidewinders---that hot new item to wind bobbins. Unfortunately this has been such a huge seller across the country that there are none to be had. No shop or distributor has them. We have placed an order for 2 dozen when they become available again in January. If you would like to give one of these hotties for a Christmas present, Marcy and Gaylor has made a gift card with a picture of this cute item--you can pick one up to wrap for the tree and then pickup the item when they come in next year.
If you have any desire to have your own quilting system at home, we now have the Grace Frame with 1600P to take care of all your quilting needs. Schedule a demonstration and start planning your ultimate sewing room.
Take care--oh yes, don't forget our snow policy--when Berkeley County Schools close the first day, generally we will close also. Subsequent days will be decided as needed. The best plan, call to see if we are in. Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, December 3, 2007
The weather today really puts you in the mood to be working on a quilting project!!! Fortunately I have several things to keep me up late. If you are looking for inspiration or ideas, you need look no further than Nutmeg Lodge. We are brimming over with ideas, enthusiasm and all the goods you need for just about any project imaginable.
New arrivals include two new Moda offerings--Mother Goose, a very retro kind of print with Mother Goose characters, with the accompanying charm packs, jelly roles and yardage. This is a wonderful project for a child--but not pink and blue, lovely soft red, blue, etc. Also from Kathy Schmidt's studio a "convenience cloth" that looks like stitching---come in and see these two new collections.
Going up for view and out for the having this week will be our Oak Leaves and Reel. This is an extraordinary project that you won't believe your eyes.
All of the above really could get finished before Christmas, so if you have items on your list this just might be what you are looking for.
Coming soon will be information and sign ups for next year's clubs. We are going to have a fabulous year with all of your clubs. If you have never joined in on this fun, now is the time to think about doing at least one of our unique clubs--you can't find anything like this at any other shop in the country.
Also coming soon will be our class schedule. We will be starting classes in January and we should have something for everyone.
And--don't forget Saturday Sampler and Block of the Month--these too will be available for your consideration for 2008.
Stay warm, keep busy and stop by Nutmeg Lodge soon--Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, November 25, 2007
All the reports in the news about "black Friday" shopping seem to be right on target---Nutmeg Lodge was as busy as any retail establishment on Friday--thanks to all who came out and joined in on the fun. This event was Judy's and Marcy's idea last year and it seems to have gotten better with age. We will run this event again in the year's to come.
Now that everyone has gotten a jump start on backings, etc. for projects to go off to the quilter, there is still time to get some smaller things done before the big gift giving event. Come in and let us show you all the great "little" kits and projects we have available for you to finish in plenty of time for hostess gifts, secret pals, etc.
Also, don't forget that we have our "wish box" for you to fill out a card to make shopping easier for all of your gifters. Just come in and ask for a card, fill out all the items you have your heart set on, place in it our box, and then when your gifter comes in we can give the card to him/her and they can fulfill all your dreams.
FYI, we will continue the sewing machine sale for a short while. If you need a small machines for going to class/retreat or have someone that you would like to start off with a great little machine--both of the machines we have on sale is a perfect machine for just about everyone.
And, if you have tops ready for quilting and don't have someone lined up to finish them in time for Christmas, check with us--we have information on a number of professional quilters and, all seem to be able to accommodate you--let us know and we will steer you in the right direction.
Come in this week and let us help you get started on the perfect "long winter's night" project. Barbara

The only thing that did sell out is the Sidewinder---this is the HOTTEST new "toy" on the market and every sewing household needs one of these goodies. Now with or without batteries you can wind bobbins until the cows come home. Fun and practicle all at the same time. Priced at $30.00, order one soon for you and a friend.
The next big excitement is that Judy, Kelly and I just about have the quilting system up and running. Just a couple more things to "tweak" and we will be quilting like crazy. If you have any interest in this wonderful item to add to you sewing room--stop by soon for a demo and pricing information.
Excitement still to come is our GRAND OPENING. Next Saturday--all day, November 17--we will be celebrating in grand style our new location. Come to see us between 10:00 and 3:00 for some really special values, some great new merchandise, door prizes all day long, and a lot of FUN!!!

NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, November 4, 2007
I'm back from Market and Festival!!!! I found so many great new things and I am so eager to share them with each of you. I have so many stories to relate, that I really am looking forward to sharing everything with each of you as well. Market was bustling and buzzing with so many people and creative ideas. Festival was crammed with vendors and shoppers. It really was exciting to attend Festival after so many years of being away. I got to see so many old friends and see vendors that I had not seen in years. I even caught up with several vendors that I had missed at Market and did some shopping for Nutmeg Lodge.
We are all just a-twitter with excitement over all the packages that have started arriving and the plans that I made for next year. Judy, Kelly and I spent today sewing samples for next year's Saturday Sampler and Block of the Month (at least one of the BOMs). Everyone who has done this program will be delighted and, if you have not joined this Second Saturday event---this is the year to jump in. We are all really eager to share this new program with you.
All of the Clubs that run at Nutmeg Lodge as well as a brand new club will be especially fun in 2008 because of the great projects that we will be concentrating on. Stay tuned for more information and signup information beginning the middle of December.
And finally new classes seem to be just about rounded out and a class schedule will be available next week---don't miss out on some great classes at Nutmeg Lodge.
The biggest events coming really soon are:
Market Review this coming Friday at 5:30. All of those great things I found at Market will be available for the first time---don't miss the fun and excitement of this wonderful event.
Grand Opening is Saturday, November 17. That event is sure to be a happy and pleasing one with special door prizes and pricing all day long.
We seem to have a large number of Halloween items left so I have marked them 50% off--a great opportunity to get started on next year's decorating. This includes fabric, kits and fun.
In addition to all the Market excitement we have new cards in stock, some wonderful calendars in two sizes (perfect gift items), some wonderful new books and, of course, we are still running the Buy One Get One Free book deal from Martingale.
Also, we have a staff change to announce---Cathy has left to sew more and work less. Holly Johnson has joined the staff and will be working on Tuesday and Wednesday. Another new staffer is Debi Waldron who will be working the first and fourth Saturdays. Stop in on those days to say Hello to two new but extremely talented faces.
Looking forward to seeing you soon!!!! Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, October 21, 2007
Life at the new location really is wonderful---we love the space we have to move around, especially when we have a lot of shoppers--we love the view out the front window---especially when the wind is blowing and it doesn't try and come in the front door---we love the easy ability to move things around and "stage" the new arrivals or things that are marked with special prices---we love the fact that so many new faces come in everyday---and we really love that all of our customers from the old location have found their way to the new one. If you have not made it in yet, don't put it off too long, we have a lot of great things going on.
Speaking of great prices---we have all of the Halloween kits, fabric, fat quarters and patterns priced at 25% off. A great bargain to get things ready for a festive October 31. We really do have a great array of vintage and appropriate colors and patterns for a truly unique look for your trick-or-treaters. Come in and check them out.
We also still have a few kits for our Quilt Pink event as well as fabric, fat quarters and the Quilt Pink Magazine. Remember that when you pick up a kit, return the finished block, you will get $2.50 off your next purchase. Also, don't forget, that coming soon we will get together for a store-wide, fun-filled event to sew our blocks together and complete several quilts that will go on EBay auction next October. Stay tuned for this fun-filled event.
I am off to Market this week and am excited about finding all of the new and wonderful items that the industry will have available for me to bring back to you. As we have done in times past, we will be hosting our famous Market Review on Friday, November 9 at 5:30. Come ready to see and hear all about the news from Market, purchase the new items that have arrived, get in on the great door prizes and have tons of fun!!!!
On Saturday, November 18 we will be celebrating our GRAND OPENING with very special prices, very special events and very special door prizes for a day filled with fun, entertainment and excitement that can only be found at NUTMEG LODGE.
I am sure that there are many things I am forgetting to tell you, come by, call or email if you have a question or need a specific item.
By the way, I will still be in Houston next Sunday so I won't be posting the blog next week--tune in on Sunday, Nov. 4 for a new update. Talk to you later, Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, October 14, 20007
What lovely weather we are having!!!!! Soon, the temperatures will dip even lower and we will experience QUILTING WEATHER!!!!! I think that we quilters live for that kind of weather, the kind of evening when it is delightful to have a quilt to sit under to finish sewing on the binding or, if you are that rare breed these days, to put a few more stitches into your quilt with your hand quilting technique. Whatever your method of piecing or quilting, these cool days and chilly nights are just what the quilting goddess ordered.
We had the first Saturday Sampler at the shop this week and with that event it seems we have settled in and found the working flow for all events at the shop. This week we announced the arrival, finally, of the Thimbleberries panels called Cover Story. We have received two of five different panels with old, vintage posters printed with pieced work around the panel. Just delightful, I quilted our two designs and several gals at Sunday Stitchers thought that I had pieced the border. What fun and how easy. Come in and check these out and stay tuned for the arrival of the other three.
New also are the Sewing Cards and cute little Sewing Kit for the beginning little fingers. This box of vintage looking sewing cards will remind you of your own set back when. Every grandmother or mother of a little girl needs to pick up this wonderful box for a special gift under the tree. To go along with this a wonderful little tin box complete with apron and tote for the little sewer to finish at the machine or by hand, which ever you are encouraging. Come in soon to see these wonderful items, they probably won't last long.
In your shopping bag when you check out is a list of upcoming events that I think you will look forward to:
Friday, Nov. 9: MARKET REVIEW.....come at 5:30 and enjoy all the news and latest items from Market. Door prizes and tons of fun
Saturday, Nov. 17: GRAND OPENING.....we will celebrate the opening of Nutmeg Lodge at 301 Winchester Ave. in grand style. Door prizes, very special prices and much, much more.
Upcoming event: A class schedule
Quilt Pink Sew In
Going Green Patterns
Just a reminder, we have a number of different Jelly Rolls and Charm Packs. Some of the fabric has arrived for a few of these goodies---you know that there is sometimes a month or more between delivery of rolls/charms and yardage. If you have an interest in rolls/charms you need to buy then when they arrive and then get the yardage when that arrives. Otherwise you might find yourself wanting the former.
Come in a see us soon, Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, October 7, 2007
Every day and each week we are in the new space brings more order and balance. We have received so much new fabric since we started unpacking that things have already started moving around and "fluffing" has begun. Changes outside and around the space of other tenants show daily changes as well. One of the other tenants in the building will be selling upholstered furniture as well as upholstery fabric---what a great addition to Martinsburg!!! There is a lot of work going on the the parking lot and I daily remind the guys to remember that we have shoppers--I hope you are not too inconvenienced but change is good and that only comes about by daily progress.
As I mentioned, new fabric has arrived almost daily--several new collections from Robt. Kaufmann including new Mary Rose pieces--a fun collection called Home Improvement with the handywoman in mind--two different collections with more "modern" floral themes--the Marie Osmond collection--and a soft pastel group that has a new twist--also, for our patriotic collectors, several Red,White,andBlue/flag themed fabric. Still to come, a new line of batiks (about 15 in all), Oak Leaf and Reel from Moda, From the Past panels from Thimbleberries, and a new line of floral flannels for rag quilts with a feminine side.
Come in and see us, there is still the new quilting system to try out and so much more.
Also, there should be some new pictures in the Photo Album--See you, Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, September 30, 2007
We are OPEN, We are HAPPY, We are EXCITED to see you!!!! The new digs for Nutmeg Lodge really does live up to my every expectation and is the quilt shop that I have always envisioned. If you did not make it in on Friday or Saturday, plan to put a trip on your list of things-to-do soon. When you walk in the entire spectrum of bolts meets your eye--you can see almost all of our cabinets at one time--the opposite direction one can see all of the fat quarters--and all along the way every item is enveloped in its own Department. Yes, we have Departments!!! Gifts are all in the front window along with our "husband" chair and book rounder and toy box. A perfect niche for little ones to play or the eager book connoisseur to browse leisurely over the latest books. Next all of the notions and machine items are in their own special place. Our new Pinnacle Quilting System in easily visible across from the cutting table. Near the fat quarter wall you will find all of our punch needle patterns and accessories and then our Thread/Hand work Department. All hand needles and thread can be perused in one, easy to get to location. The height of the walls has allowed us to hang quilts above the cabinets and all of the walls are adorned with samples of kits, new fabric lines and panels.
All of the hard work has really paid off and just as Marcy and Judy and I were putting on the finishing touches in comes our UPS driver with 5 huge boxes of new fabric. Now we have fabric everywhere---so many new bolts you won't believe your eyes.
Well, I could go on forever but you really must come and see for yourself. My good friends, Bob and Penny Simpson where in on Saturday and Bob took pictures that Kathy will have on the web site soon. Check them out.
See you at 301 Winchester Avenue soon--if you need directions check the map on the web site or call. Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, September 23, 2007
Angels come in many sizes but their faces are always easy to recognize. Vivian and Jim Cramer, Holly Johnson, Bettie Pharr, Cathy Pharr, Donna Vernon, Marcy Offerdahl, Lu Keckly, Judy Darlington, Antoinette Metevier, Rhonda Marciniak, Kelly Fleming, Lana Ostrander, Scott Winters--these are some of the names of angels--THANKS to each and everyone of you who offered your help, inspiration and unfailing friendship at a time it was so needed!!! And yes, we have officially moved from Wilson Street to Winchester Avenue. Of course, there were many exciting times along the way---great movers who were unprepared for the size of business they were moving, so much merchandise that it actually took two days, and--of course--a delay on the actual moving day, a gas leak of enormous proportions that the whole building was evacuated and operations SHUT DOWN for almost two hours (another time I'll tell you about the shopping that occur ed during that hiatus), arranging, rearranging, etc., etc. I do think that everyone is going to enjoy the new layout--finally we are all in one big space so that merchandise stretches out before you--LET THE SHOPPING BEGIN!!!!
Now all of this is very exciting but there is one little snag--we do not have an occupancy permit as of yet. I am hoping that come Tuesday morning all of these tiny details have been ironed out, if not and the City says that we cannot be opened, I will be prepared to make it up to you. PLEASE BE PATIENT WITH US--we are so looking forward to having you come and enjoy the new space with us. If you are in doubt about our situation, call my cell phone number--304-261-0551. We also do not have phones yet but are hoping that is taken care of one Tuesday--in the meantime my cell phone is always on and on my person.
I so look forward to seeing you all in the space--everyone on staff is excited as well. Cathy was in Wyoming this week and missed all of the fun but is just as excited as Marcy, Judy, Kelly and me. See you at 301 Winchester Avenue. Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE Sunday, September 16, 2007
I just got back from Retreat--this was number 12 and we had just as much fun as 24 people can possibly have in three days. The quilts that everyone made were amazing. The project this year was possibly one of the best we have ever had--the variety and array was over-
whelming. We will have pictures available later.
Well the magical week has finally arrived---WE ARE MOVING---
We will be closed this week--Crazy Club will have it's meeting at the new location on Thursday but we will be closed for business. The shop will be open for business next Tuesday, September 25. The new location (if I need to remind you) is 301 Winchester Avenue. Just one block on Winchester (Route 11) off King Street. Our parking lot is on the corner of John Street and Winchester Ave.
Of course, staff and I are extremely excited about all of this relocating. Please bare with us as we get this very active business into its new digs and everything located where it should be.
We are all looking forward to new and exciting things at and for NUTMEG LODGE.
See you soon--Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE September 9, 2007
WOW!!! What a day at Sully!!! I have said it before, and I'll say it again---if you have never been to this show, you really need to put it on your list. If you went to Harrisburg instead of coming to Sully, I'm not sure that was a good decision---just one day, outside, so much going on and boy where people in the mood to shop!!! I had such deals that everyone was tickled pink--sometimes they were 4 deep in the booth, CRAZY!!! So much fun.
We are really busy getting things ready for the move. Don't forget that we have 25% off the entire store, and sewing machines 15% off--through next Saturday.
The plan is to pack on Monday, Sept. 17 and move on Tuesday, Sept. 18. We will reopen on the following Tuesday, Sept. 25.
Now all that said, you probably need to check the web site and/or call just to make sure that this scheduled has been adhered to by others. As strange as it may seem, I do not rule the world--I'm just the Queen.
We kicked off Quilt Pink on Saturday. If you are interested in this program, we will have this available in the new shop. The way it will work: we have 9 different blocks with pattern and fabric for $5.00 each. Pick up, make the block, and return to Nutmeg Lodge and get a gift certificate for $2.50 for each block. Sometime in October to celebrate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month we will have a "sew-in" to finish to blocks and/or quilts and get ready for transport to American Patchwork and Quilting. These quilts are not due to them until Mar. 1, 2008 so we have plenty of time. In addition to the kits we also have Charm Packs, Jelly Rolls and yardage in Quilt Pink fabric. Just a reminder, the quilts for American Patchwork and Quilting can be any color. If you have questions, please call me.
Don't forget that the new show will have the new fall fabric, Halloween fabric, new gift and collectibles, the Buy One Get One Free book sale from Martingale just to name a few. We are really going to love the new space!!!
See you later, Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE September 1, 2007
I have so much to share that I couldn't wait until Sunday, I am writing to you on Saturday night!!!!
WE ARE FINALLY MOVING!!!!! Finally we have a good date, a definite plan. But first let me lay out all the news.
1. We are having a final sell-down SALE. 25% off the entire store, 15% off sewing machines and sewing table. This is good for the next two weeks. This is a great time for Christmas projects, backings, a new sewing machine!!!
2. We will be closed the week of September 18--because we will be moving on that day and getting things straight for the next few days.
3. We will open the doors to the new shop on Tuesday, September 25. Be sure and come in because we have a number of things in store for your first visit and don't forget to tell your friends.
4. Stay tuned for more information about our GRAND OPENING--we will be having some really special things going on for that event. Because there is City ribbon cutting, etc. this event will be coordinated and scheduled when we have everything in place.
Also, if you have Christmas Bucks you can stop by and cash them in for your "gift certificate" for the new shop.
And, information regarding Quilt Pink. Because we are closed the dates for the "national program", we will be doing something a little different. Check the shop or the blog later for more information.
And one more thing, the last couple of years we have participated in the Buy One, Get One Free Book program from Martingale. Well, we will be doing that event again this year but it not begin until get to our new location. Also, we have a lot of new fabric and samples that will be premiered at the new shop.
I can't tell you have excited we all are about finally moving. I hope that each of you share our excitment as well. Looking forward to seeing you at our old location and the new one as well!!! Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE August 26, 2007
After a couple of days off for some private R&R--I spent the remainder of the weekend working on samples. With the new space looming ever closer, the need for more samples seems to be unending.
Just a reminder--we still have a good selection of Christmas fabrics and several fun ideas for projects for you to get completed well early for the big day. And another reminder--Christmas Bucks are still yours for shopping in this department. I had originally told you that those Christmas bucks would be good in September at the new location--because we will probably not be up and running until the end of September--those Christmas Bucks can be cashed in for a "gift certificate" good on any and all purchases at the new location. You may bring those "bucks" to the shop in September to receive your gift certificate.
Choco-Latte and Sherbet are selling well so if these two collections have your eye, don't wait too long to get yours.
We also have a number of Jelly Rolls and Charm Packs--several flavors are still awaiting corresponding fabric. If you like these convenient rolls and packs, don't delay in picking them up--sometimes they are gone before the fabric arrives. We are also expecting the arrival on Tuesday of several new patterns and books that will give you tons of things to do with these little bundles.
We have also recently received several new bolts of wide fabrics for backings. This is a new company and I have been very pleased with the quality of this fabric.
Our move still seems on target for the middle of September. I still can't give you exact dates but we are getting close.
Coming up to co inside with the move we have several programs and events that I think you will really enjoy:

- Nutmeg Lodge will be participating in the Main Street program --Scarecrow Contest. We will have a scarecrow on a light pole near our shop on King Street. Stay tuned for it's exact location.
- Quilt Pink. Nutmeg Lodge will be participating in this nation-wide project to make blocks for quilts to be auctioned to support breat cancer.
- Think Green--we will be offering a variety of "free" patterns to get you into a "green state of mind". We will have patterns for shopping bags, cloth napkins, etc.
- A full class schedule will be available shortly.
Looking forward to seeing all of you soon---Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE August 19, 2007
Well, if you live in or around Martinsburg you might have seen the Tuesday Journal. I can't tell you how surprised I was to find that I was the front page headline and article, complete with picture. Of course I could not have afforded such wonderful advertisement. It was a great opportunity to announce to the world that we are moving. If you did not see the article you can check in out on www.journal-news.net or stop by the shop to see the article. Of course, the 15 minutes of fame brought new people to the shop and even in church this morning I had several people inquiring about Nutmeg Lodge and planning to stop by. Then to add to all of this publicity, I will be a guest on the morning Talk Radio show this coming Wednesday. By the time we get moved Nutmeg Lodge could possibly be a household word in the immediate vicinity.
I am working on a class schedule and trying to get things organized in my head for new features in the new space. With all of this whirring around there are still things going on in our current location and things on the calendar to be focused on. First, we will be putting out the fall fabric soon. I must really have fallen head over heels for the idea of fall in 2007 because I ordered a ton of fall pieces and also Halloween!!!! I hope that you will enjoy the richness of these wonderful pieces. Also our Halloween fabric and projects are sure to warm your heart. Next, we have the Sully show coming up the Sunday after Labor Day. Please put this fabulous show on your list of things to do. Sunday, September 9 from 10:00 to 4:00. One of the oldest quilt shows in the country---out-of-doors--great vendors--and just a huge amount of fun. We can give you directions at the shop if you have never been. Last, we will be having one more sale before we move so stay tuned for more information on another big event.
Happy quilting to each of you, Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE August 12, 2007
I hope that each of you had a great week and you were not too hot. I had a fabulous week because I was on vacation!!!! Yes, I took an actual vacation!!! No phones, no classes/club meetings, no deadlines, no pressure!!! Thanks to everyone on staff that did answer phones, check in shipments, hold club meetings and Saturday Sampler meetings!!!!! While I sat on the beach and watched the waves tumble to shore and totally chilled out. I went with my son and grandchildren for a fabulous trip to OC and we had a great time. I don't think there was anything left undone---swimming in the surf, swimming in the outdoor pool, swimming in the indoor pool, ice skating, miniature golf, ice cream on the boardwalk, crabs, etc, etc. The weather was perfect and we had --oh I said that already--a great time.
While I was away, the girls put out the new Whimsical's collection--Choco Latte...a 28 piece delight with those great Whimsical's colors with a coffee flair. Also the newest collection from Buggy Barn...Sherbet...this is a 26 piece collection with some of the most wonderful color combinations with great patterns and textures. Come in soon and check out these two great lines.
As I mentioned last week, the back room is really looking stacked up but that shows that we are making progress toward moving. I have several meetings this week and we are getting close to telling you an exact date.
We have also received and put up the new Janome sewing table. Come by and check out this wonderful table and see the great machines we have to go with it. Prices are really great and at a number that you are sure to be able to take one home.
There are still new things to come, don't sit at home when you can check out all the great things at Nutmeg Lodge. See you soon....Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE August 5, 2007
Finally a "normal" week. No shows, no illnesses, no deadlines, (well hardly any deadlines), and we got a lot done!!! YEA!! It seems that after coming back from Quilt Odyssey and getting unpacked the fat quarter wall was totally wiped out---everyone spent a good part of the week getting fat quarters cut and folded and trying to get things back to normal. Of course when you come into the classroom it is beginning to look like Aunt Sofie's attic. Things are beginning to accumulate in the corner and there is evidence that we are preparing for the move. So many of you have driven by the site on Winchester Avenue and you will see a lot of activity there and things are coming along. I should be able to tell you soon the actual date for the move.
In addition to preparing for the move, I am also beginning to pull a class schedule together. I need to get some definite dates before I can publish the classes coming up so please stay tuned for that announcement. I know that you are all anxious to get started on some new projects and I am getting really excited about bringing a new lineup for your participation. It seems like a long time since we had the humming of needles and machines and it will be fun to get things going again. I am hoping to be adding some really new and fun activities for you.
In addition to the class schedule, we are preparing to have our sewing machine department humming as well. If you have plans to upgrade, add to or purchase a sewing machine for the first time, don't forget Nutmeg Lodge. Right now our machines are not real apparent but we do have a full line and various price ranges of Janome Sewing Machines. We have just received our new line of sewing tables and at $300.00 they are a fabulous buy. In addition to all of this, we will be carrying the Grace frame for home quilting on using the Janome 1600P. All of this can be yours now or in the future. Talk to me if you would like to consider lay-away.
Stay cool--don't forget we still have Christmas Bucks with the purchase of your Christmas fabric and we will be unveiling new arrivals in a few days. See you soon!!! Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE July 30, 2007
Once again, I apologize for the delay in posting the blog---it was late when I got home last night and my blog service was already "asleep". What a difference a week makes!!!! I really had a rough spot with the virus thing but thanks to a great staff I got on my way to Hershey on Wednesday and Kelly and I got all set up in time to head to our hotel for a much-needed rest. Then bright and early on Thursday we got started--sales were unbelievably brisk and we rang up a ton of sales by the time she left to head for Kentucky. I was alone the rest of the time and got along splendid because I was so busy I hardly had time to think about needing anything. I saw a ton of people I knew and met a lot more new people. All-in--all, the show was a tremendous success. The quilts were outstanding!!!! Many that hung in Houston last year and it was a delight to see them. A nice mix of traditional and art quilts. Some phenomenal hand and machine quilted pieces that made your mind boggle. If you did not make it up to Hershey this year, you really need to put this on your list for next year. Having been to many shows around the country I can tell you this is one of the finest in the country. Next year my dear friend, Robyn Pandolph will be teaching so that will be another great opportunity for you who are fans.
If you were in town this week, I hope you got downtown for the art exhibit. I was totally honored to have my work featured and gratified at the nice coverage in the Journal. As I mentioned last week Bonnie and I are working on an even bigger event so stay tuned.
So many new arrivals that we have our work cut out for us this week getting things ready for some new unveilings. The store-wide sale is now over for a time but deals are still there with the Christmas Bucks and you really don't want to miss out on the new arrivals--some really outstanding collections.
We are back to normal with clubs this month and then on to the new location. The telephone service is going in, walls are going up and it really won't be long now. See you soon. Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE July 23, 2007
Sorry that I did not post this on Sunday but I have been very sick--so ill that I have not been able to get out of bed for two days. I went to Chambersburg on Friday for the guild show up there. A lovely group of quilts and five other vendors. Friday was a lot of traffic and I saw a number of people that I know--always a lot of fun. Saturday, I felt a little fuzzy and as the day wore on I felt even worse. I closed down an hour early and headed for home (the ladies of the guild were so nice to help me and wished me a safe trip home). In the meantime, Judy had been running the booth at Rail Days--she said a nice number of people stopped by the booth there. Sunday, I was in no shape to run the booth so my sister, Vivian helped me break down the booth and home I came where I have been ever since. With Quilt Odyssey looming ever closer, I am hoping to regain my strength at any moment to finish getting things ready. Please say a good word for me!!!
This is indeed an exciting week--first I will be in Hershey come Thursday --hope to see a lot of you at the booth sometime during the show. I will be in booth 403. Don't forget to stop by--a reminder that I have things in the booth that you have not seen at the shop, so don't forget that Nutmeg Lodge can still be your favorite place to stop at a quilt show. (I had a great deal on fat quarters at the Chambersburg show). The show runs Thursday thru Sunday.
Now the next piece of news---this weekend in Martinsburg, if you are not headed out of town---Art Berkeley will be featuring ten of my quilts in a "one-woman" show. I have made the most unbelievable friend and ally in the director of this group aimed at bringing art and recognition to Martinsburg. This show will be at the building on Queen Street where Blue River used to be. Stop by the shop and pick up a flyer all about the event. And stay tuned because Bonnie and I are planning a huge, spectacular event featuring YOUR quilts this fall. I will be asking you for your participation.
Hoping to see you all soon--Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE July 15, 2007
A busy week at Nutmeg Lodge this second week of July---first, we totally turned everything around and put out all the Christmas fabric. As you know, this fabric arrives early and we tuck it into every hidden space available until the magical moment in mid-July. Then, viola!!! it is Christmas in July. A couple of tiny trees and we are a Red and Green wonder-world inside the Nutmeg Lodge doors. Sometimes it is hard to get into the swing of Holiday projects but now really is the time to get started. We have a very nice collection in a number of different directions and, of course, everyone on staff is brimming with ideas to help you with your project process. In addition to the fabric, we have also started receiving all of the Christmas gift/decoration lines that I picked up at Gift Market back in February. One large box has arrived and many more are due in the next week. Be sure and put this on your schedule as you don't want to miss out on these unique and great pieces. Santa's, little feather trees, ornaments and a great new line of collectible angels to name a few. So many things to make your heart sing and start you on early shopping. And an extra bonus too!!!! CHRISTMAS BUCKS. For every $10.00 you spend on Christmas fabric or Christmas decor/gift items you will received a $1.00 Christmas Buck. These Bucks are good on any and all shopping when we get to the new store.
Now for the news about the new store. Unfortunately we have had yet, another delay. Even though the Nutmeg Lodge store space is about 90% completed, there are still things to be done to the other two store spaces. Until they are at the same place as our space we can not get the Occupancy Permit needed to move in. Sooooooooooooooo, I have decided not to schedule the move until after all the shows and retreat. I am, quite frankly, tired of trying to keep all of these schedules going. A tentative opening date will be Tuesday, September 25. Of course, things might move faster and I might develop a surge of energy and decide to to things earlier. Keep checking the blog and the shop for a firm date in the near future.
I apologize for any confusion with previous announcements but life happens and this kind of activity is really what makes life exciting.
We also counted all of the votes for our Bra Challenge. THANKS to five great quilters who entered the First-Ever Nutmeg Lodge Challenge. The winner was Vicki Thompson for her Favorite Things quilt. Vicki and all of the other entrants will be receiving a Nutmeg Lodge Gift Certificate for their hard work and dedication to quilting. We will keep the entries on display through the end of July. If you have not seen these don't miss a great opportunity to see some talented work. I plan to run another Challenge soon---don't miss the next one!!!
This coming week I will be in Chambersburg as well as having a booth at Rail Days here in Martinsburg. On Saturday and Sunday at the Roundhouse in Martinsburg, Nutmeg Lodge will be selling small finished quilts and handmade items. If you are in town, stop by and check out this fun City Festival with a ton of things going on and live musical entertainment.
Then I will be off to Hershey, PA for Quilt Odyssey. Don't forget to put this great show on your list of things-to-do.
Our 25% off Store-wide Sale will run through the end of July. A great opportunity to get backings, batting, and all the things you need for any and all projects. In August, we will get back to normal and finish sorting things to get ready for the move. I am sure that once we get into the new space, this will all seem like a very short time of waiting.
See you all soon---Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE July 8, 2007
Another great weekend with some really talented quilters and equally nice vendors. Patsy Smith and I went off to Bridgeport, West Virginia for the Millennium Show and had a great time. The quilts in the show were totally fabulous. Patsy's sister, Betty lives in Bridgeport/Clarksburg and this was her guild show. Patsy entered two quilts and won a ribbon on her Blooming Nine Patch. I met some new vendors and caught up with a couple of vendors I already knew. The shoppers were enthusiastic and the weekend was loads of fun.
In addition to trying to get things ready for the move we have a lot of Christmas fabric that has arrived---not all that has been ordered as arrived but enough to start thinking about Christmas projects and start getting ready for gifts and decorating. I will have a tree up and all the fabric out on Saturday so that Saturday Sampler people and everyone else can start getting started.
We have cancelled all Club meetings for July but Saturday Sampler will continue to on schedule next Saturday. The Moving Sale is still going on with 25% off all merchandise---this does not apply to birthday fat quarters, sewing machines and Christmas fabric when it goes out for sale. You will receive the customary Christmas Bucks when you buy Christmas fabric. The Christmas Bucks are bonus cards you receive when you buy that line of fabric---$1.00 Christmas Buck for each $10.00 you purchase. These Bucks will be good on all purchases after we move to the new location.
Because I have been out-of-town, I don't have a recent update on the new space but I did visit it last Tuesday and it is really going to be gorgeous--I appreciate everyone being so patient and I assure you it is going to be worth the wait.
See you soon--Barbara

NOTES FROM THE LODGE July 1, 2007
What a busy week!!!! So many of you decided to get on on the great bargains at our outstanding moving/anniversary sale. 25% off the entire floor of fabrics, books, patterns and notions is really too good to pass up. Even though so many of you stopped by, there are still many bargains to be had. Also as we prepare to move we will will be finding treasured kits and things that will be priced to go home with you. This is a huge undertaking to get ready and moved into the new space. My head virtually reels when I begin to think about all the things that needs to be done to get us totally settled in the new space. And what a space it will be---I get really excited when I start the process of deciding where everything is going. I think that each of you will be delighted at the expansion to every department. Of course, just like when I initially opened, it will take a little doing to get everything delivered to make the entire place brimming with all the goodies that we all need and love.
This sale will continue for at least one more week--then we will put out the Christmas fabric that has begun to arrive. Christmas in July will be a little less spectacular decoration-wise than what we have done in the past but ideas and possibilities of holiday projects will be popping off the walls. We will be able to inspire all you Christmas elves and Santa helpers. I have already put some possibilities together and will have some more by the time we get into the holiday swing. Then we will get back to moving business and probably have one more price reduction to get things lined up for the movers.
I so appreciate every one's patience with all of the finagling with clubs, schedules and changes. This kind of undertaking is never easy.
Thursday I am off the Bridgeport, West Virginia for the Millennium Quilt Show. If you are looking for a fun road trip---hop out I68 to Fairmont and then beyond to Bridgeport. I am told this lovely little spot in the middle of the mountains is a delightful place to visit. In addition to the quilt show there is a festival all over town and so should be a lot of fun.
If you have any interest in updating your sewing machine, come in and talk to me about our wonderful Janome's. Let me see if I can't interest you in a great deal and a really wonderful sewing experience.
See you soon---Barbara

Notes from the Lodge June 24, 2007
Home from another great show!!! I had this thought as I was breaking down the booth today---I saw and heard so many husbands, sons, fathers, brothers and probably a friend or two helping all those lovely ladies from the Schoolhouse Guild. Those guys really deserved a big hand—I’m sure that without those willing and strong hands the work of the show would be much more difficult. As usual the Cumberland/LaVale/Frostburg gals really did an amazing job and ran a superb show. And, I always love to spend time with them---really the best!!!!
As I mentioned it was a great show and now I’m back making plans for the next trip. Bridgeport, West Virginia the first weekend of July—come in and pick up information. This will be my first trip to this show but it sure sounds like fun.
Now for the MOVE news….as of Friday I think we are on track for the first of August. Renovations are back on track and it seems a safe bet that all will be ready well before the end of July. I will give you more definite dates and times later.
To get ready for all of this and to celebrate our Birthday—beginning Tuesday, June 26 we will be offering sale prices on the entire store—25% off all purchases. Come in and take advantage of some great savings.
Don’t forget to start planning now for Quilt Odyssey. That show is the last weekend in July and a wonderful event in Hershey, Pennsylvania. We also have complete information about this show as well.

Notes from the Lodge June 17, 2007
Another busy week and it seems like summer has really kicked in for good. Remember not too long ago we were all complaining about the cold going on forever? I love these lazy kind of days when the warmth just envelopes you—yes, I am one of those that really doesn’t mind the soaring temperatures—oh well, I have been spending time with my appliqué, a nice respite from the outdoors. We will be running Robyn’s new block of the month as our Willing Hands project in 2008. This is the first full size quilt project that Robyn has designed in several years. The blocks will be made using her new line from Free Spirit, Chateau Recoco. We will be taking signups for this Club in July. Because of the need to order fabric, I will need to have an idea of how many will be planning on joining this outstanding club next year. A sample will be available for you to see when you stop by. We have received our shipment of this wonderful line of fabric—red and green—and absolutely beautiful. This will be available in just a few days for your pleasure.
I will be talking with the new landlord this week and will soon be able to tell you the new date for our long anticipated move. As I ponder our delay I am so happy that the sewer problem was detected before me moved. I shudder to think about the possibility of being closed because of the lack of bathrooms. The good news is that we know for certain that the bathrooms are going to be in PERFECT working order. Thanks to everyone for being so understanding about the delay. The old saying about lemons and lemonade certainly applies here.
This coming weekend is finally the Cumberland show. Don’t forget to put this great show on your list of things “to do”.

Where did the week go? Busily getting ready for the trek west to Cumberland. The Schoolhouse show in Cumberland is next Fri, Sat. and Sun. The dates are June 22, 23 and 24. This is a wonderful show put on by a great group of ladies. We have brochures at the shop and complete info on the front page of the web—check it out and come out to the show.
Now for the dreaded news about our move---well as is the way of real estate and relocation, our site is not going to be ready in time for us to move the end of June. How sad!!! And how disconcerting!!!!! But as with all challenges, things will happen when they are supposed to. I can not tell you the exact date of the move at this moment---it seems that when the developer got ready to start the fit out in the building, a huge sewer problem was uncovered that had not been expected and all work ceased and began a huge refit of the entire sewer system from the complex out to the street. Until all of this problem is fixed, inspected, and determined OK, I will not have a definite date for the move. Please bear with us and check the blog and shop for more information on this.
I have said before that I really do have an amazing group of ladies who work at the shop!! On Saturday I presented them with a huge challenge and they met the task with an unbelievable energy. Now thanks to Judy, Marcy and Kelly we will have a wonderful array and number of charm packs. The charm packs will go with all the patterns that we have that calls for this cute little bundles. I have also located the straight bamboo handles that one of our bag patterns calls for.
Come in this week and receive 25% off your purchase on all batiks. This kind of sale will continue until we move---don’t miss out on the ongoing sale.
See you soon--Barbara
PS: If you read the blog earlier, you will know that I had the dates for Cumberland wrong--sorry!!! I think I am back on track now--yey!!!!

Notes from the Lodge June 3, 2007
Back from the QU Show and boy what a great time!!! First, those QU girls really know how to put on a quilt show…..the quilts were absolutely fabulous, the vendors were great and the attendees were many, fun and busy buying!!!! I had an absolutely great show in so many ways. My good friend from Roanoke and I stayed near the Expo Center and it was like a “working vacation”. The best part, I sold out of a great many things so the load coming home was a good deal lighter. Now I have to get ready for the Cumberland show. Another great group and I really look forward to spending time in the mountains.
We will have the Bra Challenge entries on display on Tuesday. Come in and vote for your favorite. If you have not brought in your entry, even though the deadline was Thursday, I will extend your entry and you can bring it in on Tuesday. You really will enjoy seeing the fun and innovative entries. Come in and vote!!
The hottest thing going right now is the Piping Hot Binding technique. The inventor and author of this “fool-proof” technique was at the QU show. I spent some time with her and she was delighted to see a finished binding in my booth. Stop in this week and I will give you a demo. I restocked our supply of the tool and booklet so you can get started with this amazing technique right away. It really is an amazing process and the edge on a finished quilt is so professional, you will want to put this on all your quilts.
So much to do, I will close this message for now and look forward to seeing each of you soon--Barbara

Notes from the Lodge May 28, 2007
I sure hope you had a very “memorable” Memorial Day!!! I spent a great deal of time working on samples for the booth for next week’s quilt show. Don’t forget the QU show at Chantilly next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. There are complete details on the web page and we have fliers with maps at the shop if you have never been to this outstanding show.
There will be a number of “new” samples and kits in the booth so don’t forget to put Nutmeg Lodge on your list when visiting. I love when you stop by the booth to say hello and share with me all the other great things that you find.
A BIG reminder—the Bra Challenge is due the end of the week. We have received several so far and they are all wonderful and so creative. These are not big projects so that everyone should have an entry that picked up a fat quarter. If you have not picked your fat quarter up along with the rules there still is time to get something completed and ready to submit.
We are still receiving items from Market and have sold out of a couple of things. One is the spray starch and really has been everyone’s favorite. I will be reordering this wonderful new item. If you have not stopped by to check out all the new books, patterns, gadgets, etc. don’t wait too long---things have been disappearing and I might not reorder some things until after we move.
And now for the “move” news—this week all red, white and blue fabric will be marked down 25% off, excluding batiks and pastels. This is a great opportunity to get those fabrics for the 4th celebration, etc.
Stop in and check out other new things that I can’t remember right now, stop by and say hello at the QU show.

Notes from the Lodge May 20, 2007
Now that the moving news is out there—and you can get the full “scoop” on the Moving web page complete with map—we can get on to more important matters.
First, I have long been wanting a “champion cause” that Nutmeg Lodge can be involved in and help in an area that is worthwhile. To that end, I have been working with the Shenandoah Women’s Center in an effort to help their fund raising and their program’s in general. Beginning on Tuesday, Nutmeg Lodge will have a box available for cell phone discards. When you, or anyone in your family, updates a cell phone you can bring the old phone to Nutmeg Lodge and place in the box. These cell phones can then be recycled for 911 calls for women needing that kind of assistance and some phones are recycled and money is reimbursed to the Shenandoah Women’s Center. I will be asking for your help in various other ways in the future to help this worthwhile organization here in Martinsburg, Morgan, Berkeley and Jefferson Counties.
Second, we have received a huge shipment of sewing machines and so, as luck would have it—we have machines for SALE. The Computer Décor machine is on sale for just $500.00. An excellent price for a computer sewing machine with lots of features and stitches. Also, we have the Gem Platinum 760 at an unbelievable price of $600.00. These machines usually sell for a whole lot more. One note, the Quilter’s Package is an extra purchase. Come in and see these great machines and talk to us about a great deal for your sewing room.
Third, to make our load lighter when we do move, all Thimbleberries fabric is priced at 25% off. Don’t let this large group of fabrics pass you by. Some of the bolts still have a large number of yards, perfect for backings for all those projects that are underway or already finished.
